Parsnips are far and beyond one of the most over-looked root veggies when it comes to sweet dishes (anything, really, or maybe we just haven’t gotten the memo), and they’re AWESOME. They look like white carrots, and taste similar, with less bitterness and more sweetness which makes us wonder… why did carrot cake overtake parsnip cake as one of the top 5 most common cake flavors in the US? It’s a mystery to us, so we’re making it our mini-mission to find great and wonderful reasons to start picking up these colorless carrot cousins more often on your grocery runs. And they’re just as good on the savory side! We…

Gluten Free Angel Food Cake with Berries and Cream
Anyone else remember the little filled-in-donut shortcakes they sold in American grocery stories, stacked amid clamshells of summer strawberries and spray cans of whipped cream? Thinking back, I don’t think they were actually angel food cake, but I always sort of thought they were, and a personal angel food cake blew my mind. Angel food cake has always been a favorite. But a favorite in the sense that I’ve only actually eaten it a handful of times and always considered it too ethereal, hard to make, and special to ever consider having for every birthday, holiday, or weekend. Which, I now realize, was a HUGE mistake. Because I LOVE angel…

Gluten Free Charlotte Russe
For this gluten free Charlotte Russe we are giving a huge shout out to Simply Delish for this recipe inspiration! Full disclosure – we joined the Simply Delish affiliate program which essentially entails them sending us a box of their gluten/dairy-free pudding and jel boxed mixes every few months, and us coming up with recipes that involve those boxed mixes as an ingredient every month, so you’ll see a few other Simply Delish-inspired recipes on here once in a while! This one uses their strawberry pudding boxed mix (we are a HUGE fan of any boxed pudding, it was our favorite camping treat when we were kids) and if you’re…

Gluten Free Pistachio Raspberry Rose Cake
Happy mid-week treat time to everyone! A huge thanks to everyone who is fighting the good fight and having tough discussions with family, friends, and with themselves (especially us white folks). One thing we value at Sisters Sans Gluten, in addition to awesome gluten free baked goods, is a responsibility to always self-examine ourselves – life long, not just when you’re in college or when you befriend someone who’s BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color), but every day. We all hold within ourselves built up prejudices based on family teaching, religious teaching, or even one-off experiences that we let shape our ideology too much. So, every morning, it’s on us…

Gluten Free Berries and Cream Swiss Roll
We had a great Saturday today, complete with this marvelously-summery gluten free Swiss roll, and a whole spread of other homemade dishes. It was 4th of July today, but instead of celebrating as we have done in years past, we took note of how our country, and all of us in it (especially us white folks) can be better. If you truly love this country, it is paramount that your love pushes it in a direction of change, progress, justice, and peace. There is no peace without justice, so our daily pledge and work will be to dismantle systems that are inherently cruel and lethal to groups of people who…

Gluten Free Banoffee Pie Cupcakes
After a year in the “real world” – post undergrad – three of my dearest friends and I were living in a 525 square foot, 2-bedroom apartment in Mountain View, figuring out what we wanted the next phase of life to be. In all honesty, I do not know how four girls managed to live in the tiniest of apartments with about as much space to move around as a shoebox. Miraculously, we all still like each other today and somehow managed to never need the one-bathroom at the same time. It was a time of cheese parties with heaps of European gems picked up at the local Milk Pail…

Gluten Free Strawberry Rhubarb Cupcakes
There’s a photo that I love, taken in my Grandma Charlotte and Grandpa John’s front yard up in Lake Oswego near Portland, Oregon. It’s of four- or five-year-old me, wearing a short-sleeve yellow patterned dress, hair cut short into a strawberry blond bob, little arms lifted and little hands propping up two massive rhubarb stalks, complete with plate-sized floppy leaves. I’m making a face, of course, thrilled to be showing off my crazy elephant ears plucked straight from the garden – tongue out, eyes crossed, probably just about to burst into a fit of giggles. I’m not sure who took the photo but it’s a gem. It was either right…

Gluten Free Matcha Tres Leches Cake
My first big-city job in San Francisco, right out of my masters program, was the perfect chance for me to indulge in all of the cliche offerings of city life. After an 80 minute commute – an hour on the CalTrain (aka “nap time”) and a 20 minute walk up 8 long city blocks, I started frequenting the corner Starbucks to pick up what quickly became my absolute favorite drink: a grande matcha latte with coconut milk, lightly sweetened. I know, I know, complicated Starbucks order (another cliche I got to add to my list!), but it certainly made those sunrise wake ups and long commutes a bit sunnier as…

Strawberry and Orange Blossom Water Swiss Roll
In the first few months of dating my current boyfriend, I got to experience his signature fruit salad. It sounds a bit underwhelming, but read on for proof of the glory of this collage of summer hues. One afternoon, he casually tossed together this incredible mixture: light with berries, apples, pomegranate seeds, kiwis, and crowned with a delicate syrup of honey, the juice of a lemon, lime, and orange, mint, and orange blossom water. Needless to say, this is still one of the staples for guests, for a healthier dessert to share over Netflix, or to round out a satisfying weekend lunch. This cake is the first of what I’m…

Pistachio Swiss Roll with Raspberry Rose Cream
Ladurée is hands down the best shop for macarons in Paris. The rose flavor is undoubtedly the best (if you like floral dessert flavors), and is the perfect pairing of deeply satisfying chew, light almond cap, and ephemeral rose flavor. Since trying my first rose macaron from Ladurée, I’ve wanted to create something even remotely similar to at least the flavor of that delicately-pink treasure. The rose gold financiers come close, but this pistachio Swiss roll with raspberry rose cream is the closest I’ve come so far. Pistachio and rose is a classic pairing in Persian sweets, and the two create a sublime harmony of earthy green nut and lighter-than-air…
