Strawberry rhubarb is one of those perfect pairs. Sultry summer evenings with slices of strawberry rhubarb pie, thick sweet juices dripping out of latticed crusts, or strawberry rhubarb crumbles and slab pies laid out on potluck tables just waiting for seconds and thirds on flower-lined paper plates. It just feels quintessentially summer. Which, perhaps, makes this dessert a bit pre-mature, maybe just hopeful that summer might grace us a little sooner than expected this year after the year we’ve all had so far. There will always be struggles we have to work through but we are facing the final battle of so many life-or-death issues like police brutality and the…

Gluten Free Kiwi Lime Tart
Are you a kiwi skin on or skin off type of person? I was always a skin off, slice in half short ways, around the equator of the fuzzy brown fruit, and scoop out the electric-green kaleidoscope with a spoon type of person. It wasn’t until I got the chance to travel to Australia when I was 13 that I first encountered a faction of skin-on folks. What a world this is. The trip was with People to People Student Ambassador program, started by Eisenhower in hopes of promoting cultural exchange and friendship through sending teenagers in delegations abroad to learn and meet people and generally foster greater awareness of…

Gluten Free S’mores Cupcakes
If you also have childhood memories of summer camping trips complete with seemingly endless (one hour) drives into the mountains, squished into the backseat with your sibling(s) and one of the handful of dry goods boxes or coolers meant to sustain you and your family for a weekend inn the woods, then this post is for you. S’mores were a particular favorite for us and our many cousins on family reunion campouts where we all hovered around ember-stage fire pits with roasting sticks in hopes of getting just the right golden tinge around our fluffy white glob of sugar. There were those, of course, who insisted that they loved their…

Gluten Free Banoffee Pie Cupcakes
After a year in the “real world” – post undergrad – three of my dearest friends and I were living in a 525 square foot, 2-bedroom apartment in Mountain View, figuring out what we wanted the next phase of life to be. In all honesty, I do not know how four girls managed to live in the tiniest of apartments with about as much space to move around as a shoebox. Miraculously, we all still like each other today and somehow managed to never need the one-bathroom at the same time. It was a time of cheese parties with heaps of European gems picked up at the local Milk Pail…

Gluten Free Vanilla Bean Cheesecake with Balsamic Cherries
I don’t know about you, but upon taking the first bite of any cheesecake, all brain and muscle function seems to slow to a cozy, foggy crawl as I wrap my tastebuds around the unbelievable richness. If you can relate, make sure you’re in a safe, comfortable space before digging into this heap of creamy calories. This is the kind of dessert you either make for a crowd when you’re not sure how the dinner conversation is going to go and you’ve got this up your sleeve to knock all your guests into an instant coma and render the evening a resounding success. Or, you make it ahead of time…

Key Lime Pie Tartlets
Key Lime Pie is one of those mouth-wateringly-tart treats that simply melts you into a puddle of glee that summer is still here. Full disclosure: I’ve never actually made a real key lime pie, in fact, I didn’t even know that key limes were an entirely separate fruit than regular everyday limes until I was about 12. Upon learning this, though, I changed nothing and went on making key lime pies with all the regular lime juice I could squeeze. Because, in all honesty, who wants to search around for key limes or key lime juice when you’re one can of condensed milk and three limes away from creamy, tart,…
