I remember being shocked and awed when I learned how cranberries were harvested. The mental image of a bunch of people in waders sloshing around in an artificial bog with millions of cranberries floating around was delightful – undoubtedly a lot more time consuming and tricky than I’m making it out to be but what a way to gather bucket loads (boatloads, if you will) of these deep crimson gems. Cranberries are strange, if you think about it. An entire bag of them weighs less than anything else you can pick up in the produce section, and they hard and dry until you toss them in with sugar and water…

Gluten Free Pumpkin Swiss Roll with Pumpkin Spice Gold Milk
This year has been a YEAR already and we’re still a few months away from the dawn of a new one. But this year has also had it’s positive notes – one of which is meeting kindred spirits through baking, both in the activism sphere that allows us to connect and pursue justice and change, and others that focus on bettering our craft and collaborating in new ways that challenge us. We’ve been lucky enough to forge friendships with many new folks, including Erin Creeks of Basil and Beauty who embarked on a food photography journey around the beginning of the shut down and created marvelous dishes, desserts, drinks, smudge…

Gluten Free Caramel Apple Brandy Bundt Cake
This may be the best bundt I’ve ever made. Bold statement, I know, but so far I’ve eaten four slices of this cake since finishing the photoshoot and honestly, if it wasn’t 10pm and if I wasn’t already way too tired thinking about work tomorrow, I’d walk the 20 feet to the kitchen and sneak a 5th. It has apples (loads of them – both in chunked and grated form for maximum moistness), it has Calvados, a gorgeously-apply French apple brandy, it has fall spices, and it is absolutely soaked in a caramel apple brandy glaze. You heard that all correctly. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for but it…

Black Lives Matter Glazed Gluten Free Chocolate Shortbread with Cacao Nibs
Black Lives Matter. Breonna Taylor was 26 when she was murdered. If any of you are parents, let me ask you – if your child was killed by police, what would you do? How would you feel? While she was sleeping. I’d hope you’d want your child, presumably one of the people you hold most dear in this world, to sleep safely every night of their lives. What explanation would placate you if you were told your child was now dead, having been shot to death by people (police – those meant to “protect and serve”) entering her home while she slept and firing into her sleeping body? Would there…

Mini Gluten Free Cinnamon Roll Pavlovas
These were definitely one of the messiest desserts I’ve ever made. So much so that I nearly thought the photoshoot was going to be one giant, dripping disaster. But they’re decent! And they taste fantastic. I’d never made cinnamon meringue before so was worried how it was going to turn out, flavor wise, but with a light cinnamon touch in the pavlovas themselves, and a heavier cinnamon glaze, it balances out. The cream cheese custard is perfectly satisfying – much heavier and creamier than the airy, marshmallowy pavlova, and creamier than the heavily-spiced glaze. They’re a bit of work, but worth it for a messy treat. And! They’re part of…

Gluten Free Glazed Fruit Financiers
Grown up tea parties are the best. Something so simple but so out of the ordinary (at least here in the States it is – we’re jealous of the normalcy high tea and tea in general enjoy across the pond). High tea is particularly fun because of the veritable tower of treats that usually accompanies a good cream tea or pot of other varieties of hot beverage. We’ve gotten lucky enough to sample gluten free high teas on three continents now – here in the US, around London of course, and one of the best ones yet was at the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa. If…

Gluten Free Lemon Poppyseed Drizzle Cake with Lemon Glaze
After more than my share of work travel over the past few weeks, it’s been lovely to be in one timezone and one season for more than five days, and this one, the home one, has spring juuuuust about poking through the San Francisco fog. In a minor celebration of the single ray of sunshine that dared trouble Carl (if you’re from out of town/country, SF named its fog…), I decided that lemon was the word and poppyseeds might as well tag along. This fantastic combo isn’t new, but boy is the fluffiness and moistness (sorry) of this delightful gluten free lemon poppyseed drizzle cake making it’s debut on the…

Gluten Free Raspberry Glazed Shortbread Cookies
That special day is right around the corner, and no matter who or what you spend it with (a partner, a puppy, a good book, or just yourself!), you most certainly deserve something packed with punchy raspberry notes and crumbling with browned butter and sugar. And in that spirit, here are probably the cutest cookies I’ve made thus far. I’ve never been a big sugar cookie person, and definitely not a glazed sugar cookie person, though I’ll admire the handiwork of a good glazer any day. Despite what I deemed a lackluster appeal of these simple cookies, they’re absolutely worth having in your repertoire and are sometimes the perfect pick…

Soft Gingerbread Cake
It’s been a while since our last post, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been baking and developing new recipes! (quite the opposite, actually). And now that we’re hurtling towards the rest of the holiday season, we figured that it was about time for something a bit more festive, leading us to Kendra’s Soft Gingerbread Cake. If you’ve ever been sadly disappointed in rock-hard gingerbread cookies or stale gingerbread people, this cake is for you. I distinctly remember making and then smashing gingerbread houses as a kid and always being massively let down by the flat slabs of “gingerbread” that I gingerly picked out of the rubble. For an easier,…

Gluten Free Pumpkin Madeleines with Pumpkin Spice Glaze
Need some fancy pants desserts to wow your out-of-town relatives tomorrow? Or just want to have a pre-Thanksgiving high tea fit for queens? We’ve got you covered with these gluten free pumpkin madeleines. And these aren’t just any gluten free pumpkin madeleines, they’ve got brown butter (a glorious ingredient I recommend putting in nearly everything), AND pumpkin spice glaze. As background for this post, I’ve actually tried making madeleines twice now with different recipes and equally disastrous outcomes. Either they were too stiff and so didn’t fit the delicate mold and just ended up looking like lumps of raspberry coal, or the batter was too thin and rose too quickly,…
